Recently, a patient came into my clinic wearing his hearing aid domes flipped inside out. He mentioned that at another clinic, he had been told he would hear better this way. While it may seem like a creative hack, wearing domes inverted is not the right solution for better hearing.
Why Someone Might Flip the Domes
The idea behind wearing domes inside out likely comes from the horn effect. By changing the way the dome sits in the ear canal, the sound pathway can slightly alter, sometimes creating a small increase in gain (loudness) at certain frequencies.
However, modern hearing aids are extremely advanced. As an audiologist, I can fine tune your hearing aids using real ear measurements and programming software far more precisely than any “hack” involving the dome shape.
Disadvantages of Wearing Domes Inside Out
- Comfort Issues: Inverted domes do not sit securely in the ear canal and can feel irritating or unstable.
- Reduced Retention: A flipped dome may slide out of place, creating inconsistent sound delivery.
- Acoustic Distortion: The horn effect may boost gain unevenly, leading to unnatural or distorted sound quality.
- Feedback Risk: An improper seal increases the chance of whistling or feedback.
The Right Way to Improve Hearing Aid Performance
Instead of flipping domes inside out, here’s what you should do:
- Wear domes as intended: Manufacturers design them for optimal comfort and sound delivery.
- See your audiologist: Ask for fine-tuning and adjustments if you feel your hearing aids are not strong enough.
- Request real ear measurement (REM): This ensures your devices are customized to both your hearing loss and your unique ear canal acoustics.
Bottom Line
While flipping hearing aid domes might produce a minor change in sound, it creates far more problems than it solves. Modern hearing aids are meant to be programmed precisely by an audiologist—not manually altered by changing how the domes are worn.
Wear your domes the way they were designed, and trust your audiologist to optimize your devices for maximum comfort and clarity.
