One of the most common issues I hear from new hearing aid users—especially those using devices like the Oticon Intent 1—is discomfort from the domes. If you’ve ever felt like the dome is stretching your ear canal or just doesn’t fit quite right, you’re not alone.
Fortunately, I’ve helped many patients resolve this issue with a few simple and effective techniques that make a world of difference in comfort—without compromising the performance of their hearing aids.
Why Some Domes Feel Too Tight
Not every ear canal is the same, and sometimes people fall between sizes when it comes to hearing aid domes. A dome that’s just a bit too large can make it feel like your ear is being stretched. That discomfort can discourage people from wearing their hearing aids consistently.
As I tell my patients, comfort matters just as much as sound quality—and the good news is, there are solutions.
The Trick I Use: Cutting Slits in the Dome
One of my go-to solutions for in-between sizing is to modify the dome slightly. Using clean, sharp scissors, I cut small vertical slits into the dome—usually two, but sometimes more depending on the patient’s comfort and the dome style.
This makes the dome more flexible, reduces pressure, and helps it conform to the ear canal more naturally. The result? Immediate relief and better long-term wearability.
Note: If you’re going to try this at home, proceed cautiously. Better yet, ask your audiologist to perform the modification safely during an appointment.
Vitamin E Oil Makes Insertion Easier
Another tip I often share: apply a tiny amount of Vitamin E oil to the dome before insertion. It acts as a gentle lubricant, making the dome slide in more easily and reducing friction that can lead to soreness or irritation.
Make sure to apply only a small amount and avoid getting oil on the receiver or electronics. I recommend using a cotton swab to control the application.
Other Ways to Improve Dome Comfort
- Try different dome styles: Some patients do better with open domes, while others need closed or power domes for better retention and sound. Also consider options like Widex Power Sleeves for a more secure fit.
- Switch to custom earmolds: If discomfort continues, I often recommend custom earmolds. These are created from an impression of your ear and offer optimal comfort and acoustic performance.
- Practice proper insertion technique: Inserting your dome at the right angle can make all the difference. I teach patients to gently pull back the ear and insert with a slight twist for a better seal.
- Give it time: Domes tend to soften over time. Many of my patients notice that after a few weeks of wear, their domes become more flexible and comfortable.
Does Cutting the Dome Change the Sound?
This is a question I get often. Small slits usually don’t affect the acoustic properties in a significant way. That said, if you notice changes in sound clarity, feedback, or weirdness in how your voice sounds, we can always tweak the programming or try a different dome type.
In Summary
Making your hearing aid domes more comfortable doesn’t require replacing your devices or suffering in silence. With small modifications like cutting slits, applying vitamin E oil, and choosing the right style, you can significantly improve your wearing experience.
As an audiologist, I love working closely with patients to customize these solutions. If you’re not getting this kind of personalized care, I encourage you to reach out or find an audiologist who listens and adapts to your needs.
